Conscious Consumerism: 5 Tips to get you started.
Share
The journey to conscious consumerism on all fronts is a long, albeit hugely rewarding, road. Sometimes it can feel like you’ve fallen down a rabbit warren with no clear direction or means to an end.
Here are five small mindset alterations you can make that will have a BIG impact on the success of your adventure into all that is good in this world.
Remember you aren’t breaking any rules by simply asking!
If a brand cannot or will not answer questions about their manufacturing processes and ethical fashion practices, the likelihood is that they have a good reason to not exercise transparency.
Try, wherever possible, to stick with brands across all industries who are open and honest about how and where their products are made. Those are the brands of the future!

- Research with an open heart and a willingness to change your mindset.
The ugly truth is just that - ugly. Be prepared to be shocked by what you find.
Sometimes it’s hard to overcome consumer barriers about the concept of fair trade and ethical fashion.
The effect that changing your habits has on your pocket is a really common road block! Know that there are some exceptional resources available that offer great options and support to help you navigate your way through conscious consumerism without breaking the bank!
- Take it one step at a time.
Rushing into making a drastic lifestyle change is more likely to end in failure and remember, fast fashion is the fad - not conscious consumerism!
Changing your mindset doesn’t happen overnight, it takes time and careful planning to succeed. While it’s easy to find a passion for doing good, you need to create a balance of keeping that fire burning while making realistic decisions that work with your lifestyle.
Even a small change can be labeled a great one!
- Form your own opinions.
The media is a dangerous beast. Be cautious about what information outlets you let influence your opinions.
We recommend sticking to sources that are fact based, rather than opinion orientated. This will allow you to make up your own mind, an important step to changing habits!
Here at The Mane Project, we pride ourselves on being a trusted source for you to develop your understanding of what it means to be a conscious consumer, in particular when it comes to sustainable fashion. Transparency is one of our core values, if we’ve quoted a statistic that you want more information about - remember to just ask...
...and expect us to answer!
- Don’t be too hard on yourself.
Desperately needed new socks and accidentally chose convenience over consciousness?
That’s okay!
If you approach making a change with a positive can-do attitude, it will be a fun and hugely rewarding journey.
